This article appeared in this week`s issue of "The Wave", our local rag. I
went this morning to see the plaque it describes. It is located at the old
P56B Gap Filler Radar site southwest of Bethany Beach, DE. The whole area
that was once farmland where the site was located, is now a forest of town
homes, condos and a 18 hole golf course. A course I might add, that is too
rich for my blood and pocketbook. 18 holes at the Bear Trap Golf Club will
cost you close to $100. It`s a public course, but too expensive for this
public person.
Although the area is being developed for the benefit of the people who want to live at "the shore", I do admire the developer for taking the time to preserve some history of the USAF and the "iron men who climbed the wooden towers" and maintained the radars. And for the state to recognize the efforts of us who put in the long hours of getting to the gap filler sites and maintaining them, was a very nice gesture also.
The pictures I`ve attached, below, show the plaque that the Delaware State Archives erected, the park like setting of the old well house and POL shed that I remember and some information posters. It`s a far cry from the picture I sent you last year of the site. Remember, you could barely see the well house for all the briars and brambles and trees.
