Old Gloriy flies over Cape Lisburne AFS on July 4, 1976. Beneath, the Bicentennial Flag
commemorates the 200th birthday of our country.
We celebrated our country`s 200th birthday with a cookout and rodeo. Shortly
after this picture was taken, the snow started to fall.
Our 4th of July rodeo featured bull riding and barrel racing. In this photo,
our "bull" is carried into place. Ropes are attached to a 55 gallon drum and, when
pulled unevenly, cause the drum to pitch like a bucking bull.
This picture is posed. After the photographer (SSgt Ken Klein) took the picture, a
few quick pulls on the rope sent me tumbling to the ground.
The barrel race consisted of one wheelbarrow and three contestants. One rode and two
pushed. Most riders ended up in a snow bank as that wheelbarrow didn`t ride evenly
over the snow covered course. If you look closely, you`ll see a female face among
the group standing behind the wheelbarrow. That`s "Aunt Bea", our dining hall KP
supervisor.
