AIR FORCE ANNOUNCES NEW NAME FOR AREA RADAR SET-UP
Effective Sept. 1, 1960, the 822nd
Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron is redesignated as 822nd Radar
Squadron. The change in name comes from under a change in the unit mission
under the SAGE concept.
The name change is actually the
final step in conversion from a manual AC&W Squadron to Automatic Radar
Squadron. All information that is collected by the 822nd radars is
automatically transmitted to Spokane Air Defense Sector (SAFE) at Larson AFB,
which becomes operational on August 1, 1960. SAGE is an abbreviated name for
Semi-Automatic Ground environment, the latest concept of air defense.
