From the Duluth IAP "Patriot", September 28, 1979:
From an email from Norris Peed:
I was lucky enough to be radio operator at Finland in 1951 . I was transfered there in Sept or Oct. of 1952 after a pleasant stay at Norton AFB. At that time there was the Radar bldg. and motor pool on top of the hill the orderly room, mess hall, and a BOQ three barracks the Radio receiver block bldg and the radio transmitter bldg. and thaatts all folks. Went into the combination orderly room, dayroom and PX to watch a movie when we came out there was about a foot of snow on the ground and that was the last time I ever saw dirt there again. That winter I saw 55 below zero on the thermometer and we would ride our bobsled from the top of the hill down to the bar-community center and when the snow plow came down he would pull the sled up the hill. I have a lot of just plain fun stories, if any one is interested. We worked on 3 and off 4 days but we only were on the air 1 hour a day. The rest of the time we worked for Collins building the first tower behind the orderly room at full pay , what a deal.
