This building had been used for the past
several years as storage by the Seattle Parks Dept. Most of their stuff had
been cleared out a couple years ago, and the the building has been broken
into a number of times since by "scrappers" stealing the copper wire. Last
summer, the Parks Dept hired a contractor to remove the water storage tanks
(ceiling mounted?) and was able to recoup about $15k for the scrap metal.
The original security fencing is still up and has barb wire on top, but the lazy contractor chained the gate with about 6 feet of loose chain, so it was easy for me to squeeze through....
Indeed as my buddy mentioned, they have scrapped all the roofing material off the top and are now hauling it away in trucks. Same with all the trash on the outside of the building. They appear to be trying to segregate some of the salavageable metal items for reuse.
I have never seen this building close up...interesting the ventilation ducts that run underground then pop up near the back wall and vent out. This building is built into a slope, hence the large concrete wall in the back, west side. The loading dock is on the south side of the building. I noticed that the East and South side entrances all have signs stating to use the North entrance.
In case anyone was wondering what this picture shows, that appears to show the cable trough from the Nike Missile-Master blockhouse to the radar site. A similar cable trough would have run from the radar site to the Air Force operations building.
The metal red/green doors for "masks" and
"undershirts" diposal was as you enter the main north entrance. They drop
into a small room, that I assume must have had a barrel or container to
catch that stuff.
