Site History and Findings of Fact
42.8 acres were acquired between 1952 and July 1959. The Air Force constructed and operated the station, which included over 35 buildings and miscellaneous smaller structures.
The site was operated by the Air Force until September 1968, when the Illinois Youth Commission occupied the site under agreement between the Air Force and Army Corps of Engineers. The entire site was then declared excess to GSA on 28 January 1969 and conveyed to Dept of Health, Education and Welfare (DEHW) on August 8, 1969.
The site was disposed of to three separate public ownerships in 1969:
- 38.46 acres, including 30 buildings, to DEHW, which operates it as Hanna City Work Camp, a State of Illinois Department of Corrections minimum security prison. Structures used as observation towers appear to be the old four-legged steel temperate radar towers.
- 0.514 fee acres containing the water supply system and 2.85 acres of related easements quitclaimed to the Village of Hanna City. The well, 3 water tanks, pump house and water treatment building are included.
- 1.03 fee acres, including a radar tower and four buildings, transferred to the FAA after its request was made on October 31, 1968.
Site Map
Several maps, sketches, and three fair-quality Xeroxed copies of B & W photos depicting the temperate towers and new chapel are included in the report.
