Damn Changeable Weather!
Contributed by Steve Weatherly
The weather at Mt Hebo could change in seconds. The following two photos illustrate this phenomenon.
In the first photo the black FPS-24 building, erector set radome support structure, and radome
(about 75% complete) are easily seen. Other nearby structures shown include the much smaller
FPS-90 height finder radar, and on the right a section of the above ground tunnels used during
really bad weather. Also shown are left - Major Reil (689 Cmdr), center - MG Elder (Cmdr 25th
Air Div), and right - Lt Weatherly (Radar Maintenance Officer).
Only seconds later, the second
photo shows how fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean obscured the radar facilities.
