The 731st Radar Squadron of the Air Defense Command operated the site until its deactivation on 18 June 1968. The site was then conveyed to the Forest Service, and with the exception of one building which is being leased to Collins Communications, Inc, all improvements were removed to slab grade in 1973 and 1974 by a salvage contractor, including underground storage tanks.
The former Sundance Communications Facility Annex, also known as US Forest Service (USFS) Fire Lookout Annex, is one of five annexes to Sundance AFS. It was located about 5-1/2 miles northwest of Sundance, and about ½ mile southeast of the Operations Area. It consisted of 11.01 acres and was acquired in August 1959. This site is one of several sites related to the construction and operation of the Air Force Station. During acquisition of property for the Station, it was determined that a parcel owned by USFS, on which a fire lookout tower was located, was required. DOD agreed to acquire another site on which the lookout tower could be relocated and to build a new tower on that site. The relocation site was named the Sundance Communications facility Annex and is the subject of this portion of this report. The site contained the lookout tower, a garage, access road, water line, and utility lines all constructed by DOD. The site was activated in 1961 and ownership transferred to USFS in 1964, at which time DOD interest in the site and improvements ended. The improvements (fire lookout tower and facilities), and 10.56 acres were transferred to the Secretary of Agriculture effective 26 January 1964. The Air Force was to provide USFS with right-of-way for utility lines over the remaining easement. Easements were transferred to GSA in 1969 and then to the Secretary of Agriculture in 21 January 1970. This site is still under ownership and control of the Forest Service, which still operates the lookout station.
