Site Description:
The Unalakleet Air Force Station is located approximately 3 miles northeast of
Unalakleet on the eastern end of
Alaska`s Norton Sound. The area is accessible only by aircraft or overland
travel in the winter while the hilltop-site
is reached by gravel road north of the airport. Nine buildings, six generators,
miscellaneous debris, two above
ground fuel tanks, lead batteries, and contaminated soil existed on the site
when inventoried in 1986.
Site History:
World War II military activity was concentrated around Nome and Moses Point with
little in Unalakleet. After the war,
a defense network of aircraft warning systems and communications relay systems
was established. The main portion
of this site, 622.85 acres, was acquired by PLO 1771 of 24Dec58, which included
4.84 acres previously acquired by
44LD513 notation. Lesser interests of 114.33 acres were obtained from state and
federal agencies. Total acreage:
737.18 acres.
Remarks:
The Alaska District investigated the site in October 1985 and, due to poor
weather, again in August 1986. Three
chemical reports by the Alaska District and one inventory report by
Woodward-Clyde Consultants were available
in March 1989. RI/FS investigations were conducted under Contract
DACA85-88-C-0039 in 1989, with options to include
design work as well. A Removal Action contract (DACA85-93-C-0003) was awarded in
1993 but was terminated for
default. A second contract is underway.
