The GFA site at Eglin, looking South
The Eglin AFB Gap-Filler Annex is located on a fairly moderate hill in the western section of the Eglin AFB reservation. Not long ago, I thought this would be one site we might never locate, due to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reporting that they did not have any data on the site, plus it being on an active military base. However, thanks to the on-line "TerraServer" aerial imagery and an accurate description by an Air Force veteran (Mike Pallone), I was able to identify the probable location. The next step was to try and get to that suspected location. As it turns out, many of the roads in the western section of the Eglin AFB reservation are publicly accessible, so I was actually able to drive right to the site with no trouble. As seen in the photos that follow, the building is in pristine condition.
As seen from the access road, this view shows the radar-equipment section of the building on the left (west) and the diesel-generator wing on the right (north). [looking west-northwest]
This view shows the "front," or radar-equipment section, of the building. The building-number sign reads "9405." The radar tower stood to the left; however, even the tower footings are no longer extant. [looking north-northeast]
This view shows the "rear," or diesel-generator wing of the building (with the radar-equipment section to the far right). [looking east]
This photo shows the east side of the facility, with the radar-equipment section of the building on the left (west), and the diesel-generator wing on the right (north). [looking southwest]
This is the view one gets from the neighboring fire-lookout tower (second landing). In the background is the range control tower. [looking west-southwest]
This final photo shows the neighboring fire-lookout tower that stands to the east-northeast. The diesel-generator wing of the gap-filler building is seen in the foreground. [looking east-northeast]
