Ellington AFB is easy to find, just a short distance north of I-45 at Exit 30 in Clear Lake, Texas. The old radar station area is also easy to find, with the FAA ARSR-1E tower and radome visible as you enter the area of Ellington Field.
The radar site is inside a secure area of the Texas Air National Guard, and when I asked for permission to enter to take pictures (my DoD vehicle decal didn`t carry any weight here), I was referred to a TANG MSgt (in full BDUs, fatigues to us old-timers - it was 96 degrees) with an M-16. He was a bit puzzled at my request, but finally agreed to escort me to the area of the towers. In a little while he warmed up and decided I wasn`t OSI planting bombs or something.
The old AN/FPS-6 tower still stands. View is approximately to the west.
FPS-6 and ARSR-1E towers. View is approximately north.
The FAA`s ARSR-1E radar, with the FAA building in the foreground. The former Air Force LRR Operations building is seen at the far right (corner only).
The F-102 Delta Dagger was state-of-the-art in fighter-interceptors during my USAF tour. This F-102
was dedicated by (then) Texas Governor George W. Bush a couple years ago. Gov. Bush flew from Ellington
during his tour in the TANG.
This F-102 carries President (then Lt.) Bush`s name and tail number.
