1st Command and Control Squadron. NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex (NCMC), Combat Operations Center (COC), located just west of Colorado Springs, CO. Now home to the 721st Communications Squadron.

History of Cheyenne Mountain, CO

Excavation and construction for the complex began on May 25, 1961, and took a total of four years and seven months to complete. 1.5 million pounds of dynamite were used to excavate approximately 693,000 tons of solid granite. Initial Operational Capability or "'IOC'" was achieved on December 15, 1965. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex became completely operational on January 1, 1966. The project was completed at a cost of 142 million US dollars back in 1965. The annual CMOC budget is approximately 175 million US dollars. Now is home to the 721st Communications Squadron.

It was announced in late July 2006 that the entire NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex might be placed into ''warm standby'' in the near future, with operations being carried out at a new above-ground facility located at nearby Peterson AFB, CO. The new facility is known as the ''NORAD - NORTHCOM Command Center,'' or ''N2C2'' for short.
