History of Lewistown AFS, MT

The 694th AC&W Squadron began manual radar operations in Feb 1960 with AN/FPS-3A and AN/FPS-6 radars. A AN/FPS-90 height-finder radar was added a year later. Also, in March 1961 Lewistown began feeding the SAGE system. An AN/FPS-24 or -35 FD search radar was planned, but was subsequently cancelled. The AN/FPS-3A was removed in 1963, replaced by an AN/FPS-66 search set. This radar was upgraded to an AN/FPS-66A in 1966. The AN/FPS-90 was removed from service in 1968. The Air Force deactivated the 694th Radar Squadron (SAGE) on 30 June 1971.
