History of Lockport AFS, NY

The 763rd AC&W Squadron began operating a pair of AN/CPS-6B?s from this site in September 1951, taking over for the Lashup radar at Fort Niagara (L-19). These radars were phased out at the end of the decade. Meanwhile SAGE operations began at this site in December 1958. This site started operating an AN/FPS-7 radar in 1960. Height-finding chores were handled at that time by a pair of AN/FPS-6s. An Army Missile Master blockhouse was installed at Lockport AFS around this time to control the Nike missile batteries in the Buffalo - Niagara Falls Defense Area. During 1962 an AN/FPS-26 replaced one of these height-finder radars. [The Army also operated two FPS-6A height-finder radars in this time frame.] The other AN/FPS-6 was retired in 1968. The AN/FPS-7 was subsequently modified to an AN/FPS-107. The 763rd Radar Squadron (SAGE) was deactivated 1 April 1979. The GATR site had been retained as JSS radio site # G-56 (Sanborn - Lockport), but is now closed.
