History of Lyndonville AFS (North Concord), VT

This site became operational in 1956. At that time the 911th AC&W Squadron activated an AN/MPS-11 search radar and an AN/MPS-14 height-finder radar. In 1958 an AN/FPS-6A height-finder radar joined the site. In 1959 the 911th Radar Squadron briefly operated an AN/FPS-3 search radar, and integrated Lyndonville into the SAGE system. An AN/FPS-28 FD search radar was planned, but was subsequently cancelled; an AN/FPS-27 FD search radar was planned instead. Circa 1962, new radar towers were constructed to house the AN/FPS-27 search radar and an AN/FPS-26 FD height-finder radar. In early 1963 the AN/FPS-26 HF radar was installed. However, in March 1963 the Air Force ordered the site to close. The AN/FPS-27 installation was then cancelled. Operations ceased on 1 August 1963.
