History of Richards-Gebaur AFB, MO

A SAGE Combat Direction Center and Air Defense Regional Headquarters were located at Richards-Gebaur AFB during the 1960s. The 33rd Air Division (SAGE) was phased out when the 29th Air Division (SAGE) was relocated from Malmstrom AFB, MT, on 1 July 1961. On 1 April 1966, the SAGE Direction Center was redesignated as a SAGE Combat Center (SCC). Deactivation occurred on 31 Dec 1969.

The base was first known as Grandview AFB, and was renamed Richards-Gebaur AFB in 1957 for Lt. John F. Richards and Lt. Col. Arthur W. Gebaur, Jr., two Kansas City fliers who died in military combat.
