The History Channel has scheduled a one-hour documentary on the tragedy of Texas Tower No. 4 (TT-4). It was an offshore radar station that was lost in a fierce nor`easter on Jan. 15, 1961. All 28 men aboard perished. `Doomed Tower at Sea` will be broadcast Nov. 13th at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time, 7 p.m. Central Time.

The 662nd Radar Squadron at Oakdale PA (Z-62) was mentioned today as a nearby radar site during a TV program concerning the Kecksburg PA incident in Dec 65. Kecksburg is a reputed UFO crash site. AF personnel were thought to have been in Kecksburg. This could have been consistent with attempts to secure a potential military aircraft accident site. At the 689th (Mt Hebo OR) we did secure an aircraft accident site in 1966 that eventually turned out to be civilian. We were first to arrive and our presence at this OR crash site did cause considerable public interest. Your guess as good as mine about what really happened at Kecksburg. That there was a nearby SAGE LRR site is true and documented in the Radar Museum database.

656th memory one of the FPS-6 towers had a flight of steps that was 40 feet. Maintenance crew chief SSgt Poirier put Tektronix O`scope (one of the old big ones)on his shoulder to carry it to top. In the last few feet he dropped it. We picked it up with a broom and dust pan.

Assuming the air defense blimp surveillance project comes to fruition, wouldn`t it be cool if the Air Force reused some of the old SAGE-era unit designators and emblems? Witness the resurrection of nose art, B-1, B-2 and other tributes to the past, it might be fitting.
