Great site! I have a lot of fond memories of the friends I made while serving as a radar repairman. I was stationed at Gibbsboro, Kotzebue and Cambria before getting an early out in August 1977. I have a few photos and a welcome booklet from Gibbsboro, as well as a lot of photos taken at Kotzebue. Keep up the good work. Phil Smith aka Smitty or Townline Smitty

Im not an ACW guy but was stationed at Nome Field and visited the 710th, 711th, and 712th many times in mid 1950s, including a crash landing at 711th. You have a great web site! Im thinking about a website for Nome Field history (1941-1956)and found your website to be a big motivation.

To Gene and Tom - what a fun site!! It was so much fun to look at the historical data and remember my career in radar (1956-85). Believe I have some interesting items for you to scan in which may fill some of the blank spots. You need to give me a mail address. Thanks. TWS

I really enjoy the site. Its good to see some of the old heads names around. I served at the 623 Det3 Miyako Jima, Okinawa from Jan 67 to Jan 68 then at the 754 at Perrin until 69 when I cross trained into air traffic control. Finally retired in 87 as an AC&W instructor at Tyndall. I did my time at the 743 at Campion AFS from 79 to 80 and loved every minute of it. Does anyone know the whereabouts of then 1Lt Andy Lee Ambrosia who was at Perrin in 68 and 69? What are the chances of geting old PACAF sites on this net? As we used to say at Perrin,You flyem we findem. Keep up the good work.

Merry Christmas, everyone! I was just reflecting on the lonely Christmas Eve I spent in 1973, on swingshift duty in the 27 Tower. I guess we all ought to stop and think of everyone on military duty today who will likewise be lonely. And lets pray for peace and goodwill to all, indeed. Happy holidays !

What a fantastic site! Thanks for all the effort that has and continues to go into it. I was stationed at 703rd AC&W Texarkana AFS from 1956 to 1959. Our call sign was BURLY BOY. The last time I passed through there was in 1982, when the radar was being used by the FAA. I visited with one of the legends of the 703rd, Jack Chumbley, who lives in the area. Jack served there on three different tours. Looking at the photos supplied by Scott Murdock brought back some memories, as I was there when the Rec. Building was built in 58 or 59. It had a PX/snack Bar, pool tables, basketball court, and movie projector booth. I seem to remember they would not let us play basketball, for fear of ruining the floor. I have a copy of the 33rd Air Division newsletter that featured the 703rd, when the chow hall placed in the top ten Air Force wide. The Mess Sergeant was soon transferred to a more elegant assignment.

Radar Eval Officer with 4754 RADES between 1971 and 1972. 4754 RADES became 1954(?)RADES and now is 84 RADES. Amazingly, its still at Hill AFB. We called the 4754 RADES Radar Eval Sq. in the early 1970s. I was a Feb 70 grad of the 3041, Ground Electronics Officer course at Keesler(Maltby Hall) Learned about an FPS-20 and 93 radars at school. Original assignment for me was to be Fortuna AFS, ND until my orders out of tech school was Vandenberg AFB. YES! I partied for a LONG time! I would imagine the 84 RADES has lots of unclassified photos of former Radar Squadron sites

That accounts for my tours in places like Taiwan, Berlin & Australia. Always challenging work & great people to work with. This site is absolutely super. Great Site! I work for the 611 ASG as a cultural resource manager for remote radar sites in Alaska. I visited a number of the sites this past summer and may be able to send some .jpg photos. I also have some questions for those of you who worked at DEW and AC&W sites in Alaska. 1) Barter Island DEW: Before the DEW started the navy and Air Force did some survey and oil exploration work at Barter Island and built an airport there. In about 1947 or 1948, the DoD members there started a school for the Eskimo children. Lloyd Robertson and Donald Berg were especially instrumental in starting this school. Donald Berg(1Lt)was the first teacher. Does anyone know anything about these gentlemen? Please call or email of you have information My phone is 907-552-5057. 2) Small radioisotopic genererators: Do any of you know if portable generators which use isotopic fuels were used at any of the radar sites in Alaska? Possible acronyms: SNAPs RTGs. 3) Cape Lisburne AC&W; Before the AC&W, there was an Eskimo settlement and possibly a trading post at Cape Lisburne, also known as Wevok or Uivaaq. I would love to know what this settlement looked like and who lived there. Please call or email if you have any information. THANKS!
