Just an old retired AC&W maintenance Techie, who surfed in from the Military Channel web site. I have a few pictures and patches from Roanoke Rapids AFS, N.C.(632nd), Nakhon Phanom RTAB (Det.5,621TCS), 705ACW King Salmon, AK., 792 ACW in N. Charleston, S.C., 4756 ADS, Tyndall AFB, FL., etc. which I can scan and send in for posting.

I was stationed at eight of these sites and Hq Norad, Colorado Springs, in the Chidlaw Building and in the MOUNTIAN for my whole 30 year career in the USAF. I was with the 661st AC&W, Detachment 2 in Buffalo, NY and Lewiston, NY. The Buffalo site was at the Coast Guard station and we were there when the Korean War began. We moved to Lewiston and I went to Korea and joined the 335th Fighter Squadron.

Spent most of my time in the Air Force at Radar Sites.

Great site. Brings back many memories to an old techie. Started out in 1953 as a 30333 (MSQ-1/2). But, needs of the service, etc, etc,got me assigned to the 133rd ACW Sq at Alexandria, LA; then to Otis AFB, MA, with the 630th ACW Sq, Moody AFB, GA (6??), Shigano-Shima,Japan with the 610th ACW Sq, 783 ACW Sq, Guthrie AFS, Charleston, WV, 903d AWRON, Gettysburg, SD, 924th ACWRON, Saglek, Labrador, 728th ACW Sq, Shaw AFB, SC, 507th Tac Ctl Gp, Shaw AFB, and 610th ACWRON, Wasserkuppe, Germany. I was commissioned in 1959 (3044/3076) after working as a 30352/72 on TPS-1B/1D, CPS-1, CPS-4, FPS-3/3A, MPS-27, FPS6/90/MS-14, FPS-20/A/66/67. Went to first factory school on the-20 series at Keesler AFB. Nearly went insane trying to maintain the early FPs-6s (magnetron a day); ditto for the first series of the UPX-14 IFF/SIF.

. Went to Keesler AFB for maint training from in 50-51. Then to Fort Bragg, NC, in a recon squadrn (TPS1B)(CPS1). Shipped to FEAMCOM in Tachikawa, Japan, GCA overhaul depot, Tdy to Korea, 1951-1952, 686th at Walker AFB 1953-1955,Beausejour, Manitoba, 1955-1957; 12th AF, Ramstein, Germany, 1957, Freising Germany, 1957-1960; Instructor, seven level course, Keesler, 1960-1963; Washington ADS, Fort Lee, Va, 1963-1965; Hopedale Labrador, 1965-1966; Western Test Range, Vandenberg AFB, CA 1966-1968. Retired Jan 1, 1968. Would be interested in hearing from anyone whose path I may have crossed.

While I was a FPS-26A Radar Repairman 30352 at Opheim AFS in 65 to 67, the AVCO tech rep for the FPS-26A was Jerry Bain. He and his wife Jackie were from Ohio. Jerry knew the Radar inside & out. He was an avid hunter; he and his wife dined primarily on wild game, and she was a wonderful cook. Whenever the 26 went donw, day or night, Jerry was always there. I was responsible for the Transmitters. Other Radarmen I remember were: Carlie(Willie) Williams from Kentucky; Bill Garrison, from San Jose, Ca; Joe Mancuso, from Ohio(Cleveland, or Cincinatti?); Jim Desatov(sp?) of California; Mitch Mitchell from Ft smith, Ak; Les Byers from Priest River, Id;Ill think of several others as I get my memory banks cookin!

I served with the 635th and 858th in the US. Also served as an Evaluator with the 4754th RADES, and visited lots of sites.

This is a good idea, and provides a really useful link to re-identifying those old duty stations made obsolete by satelite tracking. Do you get most of your info on the location of the old radar sites from people E-mailing in info, or from old documentation? This is a great site, I cut my baby teeth on an FPS-27, Klystron at Havre MT. Glad to see there is somebody else keeping the good old Always Cleaning & Waxing (AC&W) memories alive.

Very interesting site. Brought back 273XX memories. Spent time at the following locations. 962 AEW&Con Sqd, Otis AFB, Ma. (58-59); 633 AC&W Sqd, Tripoli, Lybia (59-60); 875 AC&W Sqd, Rosas, Spain (60-61); 783 AC&W Sqd, Guthrie AFS, WV. (61-63); 626 AC&W Sqd, Fire Island, Al. (63-64). Too many PCSs in such a short time. Changed AFSC for remainder of 20 year career. Did not help. Had 7 move PCSs.

I WAS ASSIGNED TO 649TH AC&W, 931ST AC&W, 762ND AND 632ND RADAR SQDS AS AN INDEPENDENT MEDICAL TECHNICIAN. Had a total of 12yrs on the above sites.

I was in the 637th AC&W squadron at Othello, WA in 1958. I also was on the White Alice system 1959-1961. Would like to hear from anyone else that was there. I also worked at Thule in 1960 for Federal Electric Corp. Any of you guys out there?

Found this site today, great job! My first duty assignment in the USAF was as a cook, A3C, from Jan 63 to Jan 64. I have found memories of that time at Campion AFS and the 743rd AC&W Sqd. I have numerious photos including some 8x10 aireals if anyone is interested.

Still a tremendous site and obviously growing. Has anyone out there served 760th, 635th, 917th or 607th during the 50s and early 60s? Reading your guestbook notes are excellent. To Chief Art B of Colo Spgs. The moving of the lighthouse near the 762d at North Truro was quite an engineering feat. Hopefully it will another hundred years or so before it is ready to wash into the atlantic if ever. I note that the erosion at the radar site is minimal.

I am a MSgt with three more years before retirement. Just found this site as I am interested in finding info and browsing old air force sites. Found and looked at: Hamilton AS, CA, & Mt Umummun & Tamlpais(?) while stationed at Sunnyvale AS from 90 - 96; Thule AS 96 - 97.

I was stationed at the 637TH Aircraft Control And Warning Squadron (AC&W), 25TH Air Division (Defense), Othello, Washington in 1952 & 1953. I was also stationed at The AC&W Squadron at McChord AFB, Tacoma, Washington.

Grew up near Pease AFB during the Cold War. There was something about seeing jets fly overhead that always filled me with pride, and a real sense of security. Now live near a MAW. The base has a different job and, while impressive, its not quite the same. Thanks for keeping me safe.
