THE SCHOOL WAS RUN BY THE 314TH AIR DIVISION COMPOSITE WING. AT THE COMPLETION OF THE SCHOOL IN APRIL 1948 I WAS AWARDED MOS 510/514 (RADAR OPERATOR). 08/17/2013 00:00:00 Name: David E. Casteel Thanks, Tom. I could not read the unit ID very well in the picture--it could have been 56th instead of 54th. 08/14/2013 00:00:00 Name: ron Carl, Thanks for the response. Low on the deck must have meant easy picking for that Russian fighter jumping the P2V, Neptune. 08/14/2013 00:00:00 Name: David E. Casteel I have just completed a rail tour across Canada from Vancouver, BC to Halifax, NS. We stopped overnight at Kamloops, BC and I noticed the radar antenna enclosed by a fence at the River Street Dog Park and took some pictures of it. I did not get a good photo of the plaque affixed to the base. Does anyone have the full text of that plaque available? I have managed to figure out most of the text from a picture posted in Pinetree Line, but could not make out the untranslated motto of the site. Also, it seems to refer to "54 AC & W" as the original RCAF unit assigned there, but I can't find any historical reference to such. Anyone out there that had been stationed at Kamloops? 08/14/2013 00:00:00 Name: Tom Page Dave: As listed on our page for Kamloops AS, the final search radar there (now on static display) was the AN/FPS-87A (a variant of the AN/FPS-20). The USAF first occupied this radar station in 1958; the attending unit was the 825th AC&W Squadron. When the RCAF assumed control in 1962, their unit was the 56th AC&W Squadron. Hope this helps. 08/13/2013 00:00:00 Name: ron On 6 Nov 51, a Navy P2V, Neptune aircraft was shot down over the Sea of Japan near Vladivostok, Russia, by a Russian fighter. Reportedly, all 10 crew members were lost. 08/13/2013 00:00:00 Name: ron Further info suggests that the 848 AC&W Sqd, site 29 at Okushiri Shima west of Hokkaido may have been the closest radar site with the greatest potential to track that lost P2V, Neptune aircraft. Any one from that era on this site? 08/13/2013 00:00:00 Name: ron Ralph, Picture of plotting board at 607 AC &W Korea. Click on documents. Scroll to page 15.
