This time our trek back from Denver took us to Gettysburg, SD, and an up close and personal visit to the remains of Gettysburg AFS! It was really an eye-opener! Although the housing has been moved to a nearby American Indian community, the club, several of the original pre-fab buildings, the motor pool, what looked to be the heating plant and a couple other buildings remain, after 34 years of abandonment. I took plenty of pix and will forward them to Gene for posting to the site. I shot a photo of the front windows of the club, and thru the windows were boxes of plates, place settings, and one box marked, `16 Piece Tea Set`. Also photographed was a 19` rack of radar transmission equipment, setting right next to one of the maintenance buildings. Would like to hear from anyone stationed at GAFS. Thanks... Another site allowed me to find my German assignment. 1960-1962---Kirksville, MO-- Closed 1968 1962-1966---Germany--Worked in the `Cave`--radar system was 412L) Closed 1989 1966-1967---Findland, MN---- Closed 1980 My 7 1/2 years in the Air Force included three locations... all of which have been closed for many years. It is as if they never were. Your site allows those of us who were involved to `remember.` In addition, you are building a historical record of a time and vocation that has long since passed. It was a time when we all did our small part to help `protect and defend.` Congratulations on your efforts... a job well done. 05/05/2002 00:00:00 Name: Jim Trowbridge Sampson 1953, Mt Tam. 1955, Saglek 1956, Gettysburg 1957.
