I answered my own question Re Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. It was Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson. Specifically, the 309th AMARC. They even mentioned the movie. The nearby Pima Air Museum is well worth a look, if you're driving to, or through Tucson. It's just off IH-10. My son and i were members for a while .

I served as the USAF radar operations officer at Cape Romanzoff briefly in November 1966. I had been assigned to King Salmon as an Air force Weapons controller and I relieved the on site Operations officer who had a total break down half way through his tour. I had arrived just after the Alaska National guard aircraft which was trying to bring the site resupply and mail crashed with no survivors. Due to inclement weather (the normal situation we faced daily) we had to store the Guard bodies in our walk in locker. It was nearly six weeks before the weather enabled the bodies to be removed. I left Alaska and remained in the USAF for 26 years retiring as a Colonel in TAC. I then spent 16 years with Northrop Grumman before retiring in Williamsburg, Va with my wife Sally. We have three adult children and 7 Grandchildren and i would like to hear from Mike Miller!

I was stationed at the 629th from Sept. 1955 to Sept. 1957 when the base was deactivated. I then went to Ankara Turkey to finish my assignment. While in Udine, I met a girl and married her after being discharged in 1958. I have been back to Udine at least 20 times mostly so that my wife can visit her realatives. We still go back every few years. My wife has a young realtive who is in the Italian Air Force stationed at Aviano. Naturally we have a strong bond. I did a few months TDY at Aviano prior to being sent to Turkey. Udine will always be special to me.

Tom...The Cyberspace Operations manual is a really great post. Airmen (with their computers)now dedicated to defending our military and civilian cyber networks are now as important as those of us who use to defend the country using radar, missiles and nuclear submarines. And let's not forget the rapid expansion of pilotless planes and drones currently fighting a war halfway around the world. Stealing a line from Bob Dylan's 1964 song..."The times they are a-changing."

And now for something completely different --

News Item: "Air Force manual describes shadowy cyberwar world -- Manual explains how dependent military and civil society have become on computer networks."

"A new Air Force manual for cyberwarfare describes a shadowy, fast-changing world where anonymous enemies can carry out devastating attacks in seconds and where conventional ideas about time and space don't apply. ...."

Go to this link for the rest of the article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39833391/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets

No, the manual itself is not on-line. At least, not at this time (as far as I know).

Served duty at UPTOPIA CREEK 708TH from OCT. 1958 TO OCT. 1959, in
Detachment 6, with the 11th Weather Squardron, Alaska. There were 3 of us weathermen in the Detachment; did observations alongside the dirt runway in a quonset hut, and later moved the weather station into the main buildings, alongside the NCO/Airmen club & bar.
Am proud of the work our team did during that year. We all received Remote Site Weather Observer of the Month Certificates of Proficiency for every month for having the lowest error rate of all remote site weather observers in Alaska. All of us 24 hr. shift workers knew "Smitty" the night cook in bottom camp, who spoiled us all through his talent in making great piazzas, cakes & sweet rolls.
Due to this, he was transferred to top camp/radar site to boost their morale. When Spring finally sprung, Smitty went for a walk with 2 others. He became tired we heard, sat down to rest on a rock
and that was the last anybody ever saw him. Planes & search teams
with snow shoes were not able to find him. Later in bottom camp they dedicated a Memoriam in his memory. He was to retire in 1 year.
Would be happy to hear from any one stationed there during this time.

Saw a few comments asking about Finland, MN Airbase. It closed down around 1980. Some guy bought the place and rented out the houses. Several buildings remain, other than just houses. The place is pretty much dead now and a mess. I dont think anyone is living there now. I ahvent been up there in awhile. I'm a life long resident of Finland, MN.

Ran across your home page and it brought back quite a few memories. I was stationed at Utopia (Indian Mt.) from Oct. 56 til Oct 57. Worked in the power house as a boiler operator at base camp. Have a lot of 35MM slides that may be of interest. In looking at the photos that were posted there seems to be some improvement in living conditions over the years, but that is as it should be. Would like to get in touch with any one that was there the same time I was. May not be many left. We are getting old.

Tom or Gene,

I work at Men's Journal magazine, and I was hoping I might be able to speak with one of you briefly regarding the DEW line that goes through Greenland.

Is it possible one of you could give me a call at your earliest convenience at the number below? Or let me know where and when is the best time to reach you, and I'll call you.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Jordan
