I just finished processing three new memberships, two of which were Lifetime members, as well as one "old-timer" whose membership has just upgraded to Lifetime. So, I'm putting three Lifetime memberships and a new Annual into today's mail. August 2010 has been a good growth month for Radomes. We've picked up something like seven new memberships. Thanks to all! Gene 08/29/2010 00:00:00 Name: Harland Schultz I was wandering, did the civilians living in the vicinity if a radar site ever complain of the buzz? I was vacationing at Blain, Wash. in the 60’s and I new there was a radar site in the vicinity because of the telltale buzz every time the radar beam swept by. 08/29/2010 00:00:00 Name: Ivan R. Milby I was one of the original operators in July 1950 at 674th Osceola Radar Site. Experienced among the first sitings of unknown objects. 08/29/2010 00:00:00 Name: Tom Page Re Harland Schultz's entry below, I know that local residents did complain about the various aspects of nearby radar stations, such as interference on TV's and radios. At Fort Fisher AFS, NC, we once received a complaint from a local who said he had just installed a new garage-door opener, and said our radars kept making his garage door open and close. So he wanted us to turn off our radars. At North Truro AFS, MA, we received various complaints alleging our radars created health hazards. They likewise wanted us to turn off our radars, or at least not radiate in the land-pointing direction. I bet there are many similar stories out there. 08/27/2010 00:00:00 Name: William (Bill) R. The Naval Air Station is being closed and I am working with the Navy to determine if the remaining building and the area is suitable for civilian uses. There are concerns with the use of solvents (TCE) and solvent disposal from cleaning the equipment and radar. Please contact me if you can help. 08/26/2010 00:00:00 Name: Gary Jacobs A good story on the wind turbine/radar imaging problem. One explanation I've not seen: Why does this phenomenon happen? A structure 400 feet tall messes up returns? Bear in mind, I was an E-4 about 40 years ago now. Maybe the blade reflects (obviously) but upward in some means as well? Like chaff? 08/25/2010 00:00:00 Name: Jack Kerr Galaxy of Stars now on line. If you were in ADC. I made the AF my career and through the years I ran into many guys that I had served with at Condon. I still have friends that are retired there. 08/20/2010 00:00:00 Name: Tom Page I drove by the former Roanoke Rapids AFS, NC, yesterday. The last two radar towers (those for the AN/FPS-27 search radar and the AN/FPS-26 height-finder radar) have now been torn down. This morning, I checked the time history on "Google Earth" -- the 30 July 2006 aerial image shows both towers still standing; the 3 October 2008 aerial image shows only the AN/FPS-27 tower still in place; and the 18 October 2009 aerial image shows neither tower. [Strangely, the "Google Earth" aerial image shown without using time history is actually the 2 November 2003 aerial image instead of the latest.] Most of the remainder of the AF Station was still intact, just even more overgrown than before. Even the main road through the middle of the site was overgrown with waist-high weeds growing up through the cracks in the pavement. Very sad. 08/20/2010 00:00:00 Name: Tom Page Re my post below about the former Roanoke Rapids AFS, NC, I forgot to mention that the concrete base of the AN/FPS-27 radar tower is still there. I saw on the FPS-26 scope a radar sweep of an air craft at 80,000 feet I saw that went off the scope in three sweeps (200 Miles). I called our head quarters and they told me I didnt. I wen't see a thing. I quess at that time it was a U2. Also I was stationed at Fortuna AFS in 1975. At that time rumors were really going around that Radar sites were closing and that radar maintenance was going to work on the back of trucks. So I crossed trained into telecommunications. I went from a 30372 to a 30770 which was the smartest thing I did 08/02/2010 00:00:00 Name: Dwight C. Hunter To: B E N N I E B A I L E Y & T O N Y F L A T E A U |
