I urge all veterans and non-veterans to visit the website www.honorandremember.org

This organization is attempting to establish a flag that honors those in the military who gave their lives in the service of their country. I heard about it from an old friend who lost a son in the Iraq War. View the video and sign the petition if you think this is a worthy cause.

At the recent 551st AEW&C Wg Reunion in Dayton, OH it was suggested that we have a reunion in 2012. It was all so suggested (and not just by me) that this Reunion be held in Colorado Springs and that it be a joint USAF AEW&C Reunion.
I am sending this to former members of the the 551st, 552nd, 966th and 79th. It is just a query to see if you might be interested in attending such a reunion. This is not a committal that you would attend or that such a reunion will happen.
I am working from a 2005 552nd email list. Feel free to contact any of your comrades and have them contact me to be added or deleted from list. Note: There is more than one email going out as MSN limits my number of addresses per mail and the total numbers per day.

Please answer the following:
Your Unit/S?
Joint Reunion? Yes No Maybe
Colorado Springs? Yes NO

Due to limited funds and cost of US Postage all communications will be done by email at this time.

I was a maintenance officer at the 848th AC&W Squadron, Wallace Air Station, Republic of the Philippines from 1968-69. We had a FPS-20 and a FPS-6B height finder (that never seemed to work). We provided flight follows on B-52s from Anderson AFB flying to bomb Hanoi, and combat intercept training for fighters from Clark and Subic Bay. Ryan Aircraft had a drone missile facility nearby to give the fighter pilots something to shoot at. It was an interesting time.

I spent 1957 at the 719th AC&W Sqdn, Sparrevohn Alaska. Quite an experience. We now live near the Osceola radar site which was closed in the 1970s. About all the buildings are still there, occupied by a religious retreat group. Still one old FPS-6 tower. The dome was removed and now the water leaks down thru the tower and is causing rust. It is not open to the public, part of the retreat group.

Thanks for posting the "Remembering Lima Site 85" article.

Most of us who served in the radar career field had pretty easy duty compared to others who served in a war zone. No matter how "safe" a military occupation can be, there is always the risk that one can be placed in harm's way. When we all raised our right hands at the induction center, we were all putting our lives on the line for our country. I'm sure that when Richard Etchberger raised his right hand, he was probably thinking of the "safe" job he would be getting as a radar tech. However, when the time came, he did his duty and paid the ultimate price as he saved his buddys. I would like to think that the rest of us would have done the same thing in similar circumstances.

while stationed at Luke AFB in he early 70s as a security police. i was sent with 3 other young guys to Ajo to "look after" the radar station. we spent 3 months out in the desert.

they very rarely traveled out there to see what we were up to. we used a generator to supply electricity and water. we lived in the base commander's house.

spent nights catching rattle snakes, and visiting the A&W down town, talking to the native mexican girls. what were they thinking. sending 4 young airmen with hardly any supervision out in the desert.

we visited the Pima indian reservation. we had fun, and we got paid extra for being out there.

i look back on it fondly.

We are seeking historic information about, and vintage photos of, the Seaward Extension Shore Station (SESS) sites. These were the High-Frequency (HF) Transmitter & Receiver facilities that were used to communicate with the Navy Radar Picket Ships in the 1960s. We have just learned that one SESS pair was located at Cape Charles AFS, VA. Another SESS pair might have been located at Otis AFB, MA. Anyone with information and/or photos, please contact us. Thank you! -- Tom
