Iceland we had 3 tropo antennas this was our main means of communication to the world, along with UHF/ VHF &HF not being a comm. guy all I remember is the Aurora Borealis (North. Lights)raised hell with comm. we had a tech. worked for RCA at the time who had the nick name of "Tropo" had been at the site as an Airmen 1st. returned as a tech rep. for RCA was at the site 18mos. What a hell hole. 11/25/2011 00:00:00 Name: Tom Page For veterans of North Truro AFS from the mid to late 1950s: I learned just today that there was once an experimental Troposcatter Communications link between North Truro AFS (Z-10) and Stewart AFB (SAGE Direction Center DC-2) at Newburgh, NY. This would have been in the mid/late 1950s. Presumably, the same tropo. comm. facility at North Truro AFS (located south of the housing area) that later communicated with Texas Tower No. 2 (TT-2) was used for this link to Stewart AFB. I do not know if the 3 tropo antennas that faced west to communicate with Stewart AFB were later re-positioned to face east to communicate with TT-2, or if different antennas were used. If any old-timers know, please let me know. Photos would very useful, too. God Bless. 11/22/2011 00:00:00 Name: John Tianen Our team of three just got back from three days in Saratoga Springs, NY. We have selected a hotel and locked in the dates of September 9 - 13 for the reunion of the 656th Radar Squadron. We are cleaning up all the loose ends and will be releasing all the reunion details on our reunion website very soon. Through a stroke of luck, we were able to contact the site caretaker and have gotten permission for a 2-hour site tour as part of the reunion. For safety reasons, no building or radar tower can be accessed. As we left Saratoga, we stopped by the old site. We couldn't get access, but we were able to see that the old gal is not aging very well. One barracks (A I believe) has been renovated and houses living quarters and an office for the site owner who lives in California. Moscow AFS was once the Over-the-Horizon-Backscatter (East) radar transmitter facility. According to this news article, the auction has received only 2 bids so far.
