They stayed put until Monday morning, except for the one who left to visit a hobby shop and returned with balsa wood, glue, carving tools and silver paint. The group emerged with a neatly bound 33-page proposal and an impressive 14-inch scale model of an airplane on a stand. Col. Pete Warden, the Air Force chief of bomber development, studied the result and pronounced, “This is the B-52.” One of those six was Holden Withington, and on Dec. 9, at age 94, he became the last of the B-52 designers to die. His daughter, Victoria Withington, said he died at his home on Mercer Island, Wash. He had Alzheimer’s disease ..." 12/14/2011 00:00:00 Name: John Tianen The Atlas missile silos were built in northern New York in 1960 and 1961. One of the radar maintenance guys stationed at the 656th Radar Squadron was from that area and helped build them right after he left high school. They were deemed obsolete by 1965 and de-activated. At the time, I lived near I-87 that runs north from Albany, NY to Canada. I was driving over an I-87 overpass one spring day in 1965 when I was stopped by a police barricade. As I waited, I watched as the Air Police escorted an Atlas missle on a trailer under the overpass. Security was very tight. I later learned the deactivated missiles were destined for Cape Kennedy for use in the space program. As I recall, the missile was close to 90 feet long. Its skin appeared to be highly polished stainless steel or aluminum. It was a sight I will never forget. 12/13/2011 00:00:00 Name: Dave Fischer Worked on the AN-FST2B and BUIC III at Fortuna AFS, ND and on the FSQ7 at Duluth AFB - (1970 - 1974).
