One of the best website regarding military service. I served with the USAF with the 966th AEWC Sqn. at McCoy AFB, FL from 1/67 to 1/68, then I was assigned to Hopedale AFS, Labrador with the 923rd ACW Sgn from 1/68 to 3/68. Then was assigned to the 667 ACW Sqn. Hofn, Iceland from 4/68 to 1/69. I then joined the USAFR in 9/72 with the 79th AEWC Sqn at Homestead AFB, FL and served with them until closure of the 79th. I was also assigned as a civilian with the 31st ADA (Hercules/Hawk) at Homestead for about 1 year. The 31st. was closed by Pres. Carter in September 1979.
Now live in SW Florida for past 34 years in Punta Gorda, FL. Welcome emails from former AEWC and ACW ops folks from past years assignments.

To Howard Phillips...

I got the information about the squadrons in question from two Class A passes issued to my late stepfather. Those units were, in fact, located where I said they were. Keep in mind that these were in the earliest days of the Air Force and a lot of things were changing very fast. In this transitional period, I'm sure that records became lost as to the locations of certain units. All I can say is that I have the documentation. Plus my Dad often spoke of his various assignments during his brief tenure in the Air Force. The pass issued at March AFB is dated 7-15-1948. The pass issued at Orlando AFB is dated 4-29-1949

I was going through some papers of my late stepfather and found a lot of old orders and other items related to his years in the Air Force. He was a WWII Army vet who was released from the service in 1945. In early 1948 he reenlisted in the then new Air Force. Based on his old Army rank, he entered as a SSgt. His initial assignment was with the 638th Tactical Control Squadron which appears to have been a part of the 506th Tactical control group based at March AFB in CA. By 1949 he was assigned to the 652nd AC&W Squadron which was a part of the 539th AC&W group in Orlando, FL. Later he was assigned to Mitchell Field on Long Island, NY. Sometime in 1950 he was assigned to the 655th AC&W lashup site located on Pine Camp (now Fort Drum) near Watertown, NY. It was there he met my mother (a widow) and married her in 1951. He was honorably discharged from the AF in 1951 for medical reasons. I searched Radomes for both the 638th and 652nd squadrons but found nothing related to their then locations.
