I was at Montauk AFS NY, Watertown AFS NY and Fortuna AFS ND, and Lockport AFS NY. Fortuna also had an AN/FPS35. I worked at the GATR sites(Ground to Air Transmit/Recieve) Radio.

Looking for former members of the 778th AC&W Sq, Havre MT. I was there from Nov 57 to Jan 60. Worked in the CommCen.

I spent over 21 years in the ac&w radar Maintenance field, and find your web site very interesting. I was stationed at Hofn Iceland/667 Radar Squadron in 66 & 67. I also taught at Keesler for 7 1/2 years

Tom and Gene what a wonderful site. The pictures are great, I’ll have to dig mine out and send them to you. Reading about the experiences of others brings back memories, some fond and some not so fond. I spent my AC&W time attached to the 717 Sq Tatalina in 63 & 64. I was with AFCS, ground to air radio maint. Some of the notable things that happened while I was in Alaska, the next flight from McChord didn’t make it, there was a full eclipse of the sun, it was cloudy that day, President Kennedy was assented, it was one of the coldest days -67 and the earth quake, that was the our day to call home. Most of my time was spent at the upper camp, we had a great view of Mt. Mac and McGrath. There were 10 to 15 of us up there. since we were isolated we had to find ways to entertain our selves and we did. We played a lot of Harts, dominoes, shot home made gunpowder rocket up the hallway toward the 20 tower. We also made a tape we titled Alaska’s Lost Year, our humorous idea of what a year at an AC&W site is like. I’m glad I had the opportunity to visit the last frontier. Question, in the photo gallery there are pictures of what is called the Cool barge. I never heard of it but we had the Mona Lisa barge, are they the same? Also there is a sight listed as Takotna, I think it and Tatalina are the same, Tatalina is on Takotna Mountain.

Nice to see that they havent forgotten us scope dopes. Spent all kinds of time in Radar and Radar Sites. Some time in AEW&C. Havent read your write-up yet, but I am quite sure it is good. Thanks Speak sweet and I might have some pictures for you.

I enjoy this site a lot, I check in regularly to see new material. I live in Central Alaska, and have documented the Fort Yukon White Alice (WACS) site with a website, before it was demolished in 1999. Was stationed at Mt.Laguna AFS upon graduating from Keesler until discharged in 1972. Was a technician repairing ANFS T-2 computer and its peripherals. Also passed 5-level training for equipment repair of our GATR site. Was an interesting time in my life. Thanks for having this web site. My USAF training formed the basis for my career thereafter ... Ive no regrets about my time at Keesler or Laguna.

I served at the 768th AC@W Sqdn at Moriarty, NM from 1955 til 6/58 as a GCI operator.

Just want to say again how much I appreciate this superb website. I am privileged to have been welcomed as a member of Radomes, Inc., and I continue to enjoy staying in touch and reminiscing about my AC&W days. Nice work, guys. Ill try to round up some memorabilia and see if it might be of interest - - I think I even have my old textbooks from Keesler.

Tour was 5/57 to 5/61 with time spent in AC&W at King Salmon, Alaska; Geiger Field, Spokane, Washington; and in S.A.G.E. at McChord, Tacoma, Washington. Just retired federal civil service after spending many years testing and certifying US Navy Combat Data Systems used on-board aircraft carriers. Was radar operator 273X0 most of my career from 4/53 to 6/76. started out with 750th AC&W, Boron AFS, CA to 719 AC&W, Sparrevohn, AK then to AEW&C with 965 AEW&C Sq, McClellan AFB, CA then to 603 AC&W Sq, Langerkopf, Germany then back to 552 AEW&C Wg McClellan AFB, CA serving in 963, 964, and 965 AEW&C Sqs then to 634 RADRON, Burns AFS, OR. Then entered new radar field BMEWS with Det #!, 71st Air Surveillance Wg, Thule AB, Greenland. On return to CONUS went to 634 AC&W, West Mesa AFS, NM, closed her up in 68 and wound up in SAGE, Malmstrom AFB, MT after that I wound up in Command and Control with the 18FIS, 460FIS both at Grand Forks AFB, ND from there to Det #2, 48FIS Homestead AFB, FL and finished my career with PACAF HQ Hickam AFB, HI.You have a great site here. Hope someone I know is out there.

I served with 76th FIS @ Westover AFB 62 to 63 We were part of 26th A.D (BOADS) Boston Air Defense Sector. In 63 I did a PCS to the 445th. @ Wurtsmith in Mi. They were either in the 30th. A.D and moved to the 29th. or vice versa. Cant remember..been a while. One was Sault St. Marie Air Defense Sector (SAADS) and the other was Detroit Air Defense Sector (DEADS). Anyway..I enjoyed your site and would like to find something devoted to the total ADC. -Bill

Stationed at the 680th Radar Squadron, Palermo NJ, from July 1961 until June 1966. Would be glad to hear from anyone from that time period, or any other time from period, from that radar site or neighboring sites. Although not a radar tech, I was an AN/FST-2 tech. I am sure you radar guys remember us. I was stationed at Neah Bay Wa. From 1969 -1972. When I first joined the Air Force in 1963, I worked as an AC&W operator (scope dope!) Did time in Alicante, Spain 1963-1964, Kaiserslautern, Germany 1964-1965, Limestone, Maine 1965-1966 and finally, Cheju-do island and Osan AB Korea 1966-1967. I would like to here from anyone who was at any of these place during those periods.

I was a radar tech. on the pine tree line (red cliff, Labrador, pepperell) in 53-55). In 1956 I was assigned to Griffiss AFB to the 1st Comm. Sqd. One task we had was to install the radars on the Texas Tower off the coast of Mass. Have a lot of slides of that tower and the teamthat put up those radars if anyone is interested. It was a wild ride on a tug boat from Weymouth, Mass. to the tower.And the egress from the boat to the tower was hair raising. Anyone out there?

IVE BEEN KEEPING AN EYE ON LOCKPORT AFS. I CHECK ON IT EVERY FEW WEEKS. THE GATR SITE APPEARS TO HAVE STOPPED OPERATING. SOME OF THE WIRING WAS REMOVED FROM THE POLES, AND THE LIGHTS ARE NO LONGER ON AT NIGHT. I WAS TOLD THE FAA WAS USING IT. NEW ANTENNAS HAVE BEEN PUT UP AT NIAGARA FALLS AFB. ILL HAVE TO ASK SOMEONE IF THESE REPLACE THE GATR SITE

I was: OTS 62-G (lots of weapons controllers); 782Radar SQ, Rockville IN, 623AC&W, Det 2, Kume Shima, Okinawa; and 4780 Flying Training Sq (then became Air Defense Sq), Perrin AFB, TX(F-102 training, we shared the radar with the 745AC&W). 623AC&W and its associated units, 624 & 851 sqdns, 529 AC&W Gp and the 2152 Comm Sqnd will have our second reunion at Dayton/Wright-Patt/USAF Museum in Sep 2000. I would love to hear from anyone from the above units. This page is a gold mine!

I spent a tour at P Mountain, 931st AC&W and finished out my enlistment at Empire, MI, 752nd AC&W. My AFSC was 30452b out of Tech School but was qualified for 30450 when I got out. Thanks for the memories. JLG

Love it! I served at Thule from 66 to late 67 as an RCA tracker tech. And then had the misfortune of going back in 1980 with FES as a DR grunt. Got there just 2 weeks after my beloved tracker burned. I loved every minute I spent at Thule. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful places in the world -- in its own rugged way. Ron Altman

I was assigned to the 752nd AC&W Squadron, Empire AFS, Michigan,from 2/59-8/60, as an illustrator, to maintain and update the plotting boards. I then was transferred to the 787th AC&W Sq., Chandler AFS, Minnesota until 11/61. Then to 64th ADiv HQ, Stewart AFB, NY. Honorably discharged in 10/62.

I couldnt find any information on the 680th AC/W Sqdn, Yaak, Montana. I was stationed there in 1956-57. The site was built around 1954.

From 9/50 to 12/52 was S/Sgt instructor at 3381st Tech Training Squadron, Keesler AFB where I taught Ground Radar Systems in Hanger #2. Radars: TPS-1B, TPS-1D, CPS-1, CPS-4, CPS-5, CPS-6B, and UPX-7. Went on to GE as engineer on FPS-6, FPS-7, FPS-8, FPS-88, MPN-14. Glad to find this web site. A lot of old memories. Now VP at ITT Gilfillan maker of ATC Radar Systems.

On June 30,1955,we departed Anchorage on a train for Fairbanks. The cattle cars were a bit uncomfortable,what an adventure.Arrived at Campion radar site by a C-47 from Fairbanks.Tour of duty was 1 1/2 years. Anyone that can remember the time period please reply.

THEY HAD REMOVED A MAGNATRON TUBE AND SET IT DOWN BESIDE THEM.THEY WERE THERE ABOUT AN HOUR.LO AND BEHOLD THEY WERE RUSHED TO STRONG MEMORIAL HOSP. IN ROCHESTER NY WITH RADIATION SICKNESS.THEEY SURVIVED O.K. BUT THEY LOST THEIR HAIR. I WAS OUT OF THE A.F.BY THEN . MY SITE AT EMPIRE{752}HAD THE SAME RADAR ANCPS 6B THIS STORY WAS CARRIED IN THE DEMOCRAT AND CRONICLE IN ROCHESTER NY

Great site. You have done a great job of putting together a lot of diverse material. I served with the 874th AWCRON at Inoges, Spain in the early 60s. Tough duty !! We have identifed roughly 125 of our compadres from those days and had a reunion of 50 of them last summer. I will pass your site on to them and hopefully they can contribute to your effort. Most of the AC&Ws I served on were in Canada. Most of those were built & first manned by the USAF. I was at 34th Hdq NORAD Div in Battle Creek from 66 thru 69. It was great & I hated to return to Canada. I was in the RCAF/CAF for 34 yrs. We have a similar web site for the Canadian Pine Tree Line Radars. We are having a big reunion in North Bay the end of Aug/2000. Good luck.
