On Aki Yasudas map of Klamath, CA (777). The little T shaped building by tennis court, bowling alley, hobby shop and C barracks was a mobile home. It was used as family guest quarters. My family and I spent a week there when we first arrived at Klamath March of 1970. Other two sites I was at did not have a guest quarters.

I started in Feb 1940 with 1st Aircraft Warning Company at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Our first unit was prototype of the SCR 270 located at Atlantic Highlands, NJ, Twin Lights lighthouse. We eventually became part of the ADC (Air Defense Command) commanded by Gen Cheney. We eventually established stations along both coasts of the US and Iceland, Newfoundland, Guam, Phillipines, Hawaii, Panama, etc. This was accomplished in 1940-41.

Ahhh! The sweet smell of leaking Glycol coolant and warm winter nights atop a 125 radio antenna! Spent the time from March of 60 to September of 61 at the 752nd ACW in Empire, MI as G/A radio maint. and crosstrained in radar (FPS-7 and FPS-6 height-finders) Our G/A callsign was bookdate. Not to be confused with the scope dopes :) callsign! Left in September of 61 with a SSgt (Davis?) from ops and another radio maint. type, Darrell Sorg, for Kingston, NY and project Bluesuit (SAGE computer maint.). If anyone knows the name of the SSgt, please, let me know. And, of course, how I can contact him. Thanks for the memories! Great site.

The call sign for Bangor Air Defense Sector SAGE 1958-1961 was BANKMUD. Then until it closed in 1969 was BLUEBOTTLE. THE 608TH AT PY-DO KOREA WAS FANBLADE. Others I remember was 726th TCS at Shaw AFB was DISCOVER, 727TH at Myrtle Beach was EXCEED, 728th at Pope AFB was FEARLESS. Does anyone remember what the callsign for 729th at Warner Robbins AFB was? This was in 1956. I was in TAC at Shaw for a year, the worse assignment I ever had They use to say SAC S----, but for me it was TAC.

Very impressive and useful website. Have learned a lot. I am interested in geodetic survey aspects of SAGE sites, like the one near me, Charleston, Maine. Was lat & long determined for each RADOME? At Bucks Harbor, Maine, one RADOME was set directly over a Coast Survey station with precise lat & long. Some RADOMEs are higher than others. The TELSTAR site at Andover, Maine in 1962 had 5 other 210 foot RADOME and horn antennas proposed but never built. Geosynchronous came along. Each satellite RADOME was preciesly positioned so as not to be blocked by another. I assume that is why some SAGE RADOMES are taller than others, and is how placement is decided? Do plans for SAGE sites show triangulation diagram? Thanks.

I noted that you are collecting Call Signs. The following were in effect in the 33 Air Division during the mid to late 50s. The 703rd at Texarkana, AR. was Burly Boy. The 33rd Plot Room at Tinker AFB in OKC was Diploma. Also located at Tinker was the 746th, with a call sign of Top Coat. The 653rd, located at England AFB near Alexandria, La. had a call sign of Goatee. This was later changed to Bubble in 196?. Short Horn was the 747th at Ellington AFB in Houston. They changed to Tape Worm in 1960. The 745th was located at Duncanville, TX., with a sign of Utah. I do not recall the call signs of the 815th, at Lufkin, TX.; the 688th at Amarillo AFB, TX.; the 683rd at Sweetwater AFS, TX.; the 741st at Lackland AFB; or the 811th at Port Isabel, TX. Maybe someone can fill in the names.

A friend of mine clued me in to this web site. From just a short look through parts of this you have done an a terrific job in putting this all together. Ill have to sit done an go through all the parts. I spent 26 years in Radar Maintence at different Squadrons, Then with the 4754th Radar Evaluation Sq, and some time in the installation squadron at Norton AFB,Ca. This web site is something that was needed because I know of no place where recognition was given to those who spent time at the sites. Thanks a lot for all your work.
